Twyford Organ

Full details of this organ can be found here, but below is a summary.

The original Walker organ was recently rebuilt at a cost of £265,000, details of which can be found here.

J.W.Walker built a single manual and pedal organ of 6 stops for the west gallery of the old church in 1867. Walkers installed this organ into the new church when it opened in 1878, behind the organ case on the North side of the Chancel. This case was designed by the church architect, Alfred Waterhouse, as part of the fixtures and fittings for the new church.

The organ was enlarged in 1897 by the local organ builders W.J.Burton of Winchester, who added a Swell Organ. The organ was further enlarged in 1956 by local builder Richard Boston, who added extra pipes from a variety of second-hand sources in a haphazard manner. The organ was further rebuilt by David White in 1989.

In 2006, Harrison & Harrison of Durham built a new organ based around the original Walker pipes and Waterhouse case, in collaboration with renowned organ advisor Stephen Bicknell and church organist Colin Harvey. The new organ draws its inspiration and a high degree of discipline from Victorian Walker principles and has received much praise for its stylish musical qualities. It was the last project Stephen Bicknell was to see through to completion before his death in 2007.
