South Downs Gateway Churches

West End (Loo) Project

Developing the West End of our Village Church in Colden Common

STOP PRESS:

 During 2020 a total re-ordering of the West End of the church took place.
Thanks to significant grants and donations received from:
The Colden Common Parish Hall Trust; Hampshire County Council Rural Communities Fund;
Winchester City Council Community Infrastructure Fund; Colden Common Parish Council;
The Allchurches Trust Ltd; Hampshire & the Islands Historic Churches Trust; The National
Churches Trust; Colden Common Methodist Church; members of SDG benefice of churches;
plus great support from local organisations, businesses and individuals, as well as many
years of fundraising events the £120,000 refurbishment project was completed.
To a design by Connelly Wellingham architects, work at the West End of the church
included:
Removal of all fixed seating; The digging out, rebuild and dampproof of all footings,
including those beneath the South and West aisles; Repair and redecoration of walls and
wall panels; Relaying of aisle stones to make flat and safe; Replacement of all other flooring
to a new safe and accessible level; Relocation of the font to an inclusive central position;
Installation and connection of water and drainage systems; Installation of efficient electrics,
heating and lighting; Installation of a fully compliant, sound-proofed toilet room with fixed
nappy-change shelf; Installation of an illuminated, magnetic wipe-clean noticeboard;
Installation of an equipped kitchenette with servery; The creation of an open meeting area/
activity zone.
This work has transformed a dingey, discriminatory, dilapidated space into a bright, fully
inclusive, welcoming social area, better suited for 21c worship and pastoral care, and to
allow wider community use of the church building.
